I would come into the gym and watch my friend train and one day decided to give it a go myself and I became hooked…I just wish I started earlier!
I was kind of nervous because I hadn’t trained in MMA before but after I had my induction and started the warm ups the nerves went away and I got really into it as the class went on. Great feeling.
I definitely love how supportive everyone is and how you are encouraged to get the best out of yourself. It’s more than just rocking up and doing a martial arts class, it’s about pushing yourself to always reach new highs. I started by wanting to learn some self-defense and have a great workout and now I’ve gone way beyond that and I’m learning as many different combos and techniques as I can – I even recently competed in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament!

In Martial Arts everyone has their own style and that nobody you train with is the same – and through this I learnt the importance of being myself. This has translated to how I live my life outside of the gym where I focus on being who I want to be and I am much happier for it.
It’s ok to be nervous but remember to relax. Martial arts is really fun, and I think if you are able to manage the first few weeks where you are picking up the basics, then you’ll start loving it and get obsessed with it. I can’t get enough and sometimes even train twice a day.
I’d been talking about starting BJJ for many years, one day I got sick of talking about it and just did it.
It’s very intimidating to start anything up, but from day one; I felt relaxed and comfortable. If I was to sum up Legends in three words it would be: welcoming, supportive and fun.

BJJ has been a challenging experience being one of the smaller guys at the gym. Over time, with the focus and attention I’ve been given from David I have now developed to a technical enough level where I can give back to the community (refereeing/coaching). BJJ has taught me to be more humble, disciplined and understanding.
The team, coach and my desire to challenge myself keeps me motivated. I know every session will be challenging and being in a supportive environment really helps push me to new levels.
Overcoming the fear of competing for the first time was a very proud moment in my BJJ journey. Having dodged the competition scene for over 3 years and competing for the first time as a blue belt, David provided the support and guidance to make me believe in myself and just give it a go. As a result I got Silver at the 2018 Australian Nationals.
Just give it a shot, it may seem intimidating at the beginning but, you’ll never know your potential until you step out of your comfort zone. Legends provides the perfect setting for this, with lots of experience and support.
After I had lived in Africa and been in a few rough situations, I made a decision to learn a martial art seriously and obtain the ability to defend myself. A few months later I moved to Thailand and trained in Muay Thai full time.
I wanted to be able to learn to kick and punch as well as use my knees and elbows so I initially chose to pursue Muay Thai in Thailand where I was thrown into the ring to spar and clinch with guys everyday! Then when I moved to Melbourne I thought that I would give MMA a go so I can also add some Jiu-Jitsu to my arsenal and by that time I was more than comfortable to grapple and roll with boys. It actually feels pretty good to beat up someone bigger than you!
I walked in, met the MMA trainer Chris and knew straight away that this is the guy I want to train with!
The trainers! I have trained with some of the world’s best champions before, but never have I met someone who cares about his students as much as Chris does. He understands that martial art is for life, not just for a few minutes in the ring! There are gyms where the trainers may be incredible fighters themselves, but if they don’t even know their students by name then how will they know your strengths, your weaknesses and your goals let alone help you achieve them? Chris not only knows us individually, he also looks out for us and takes our goals seriously.
When I first started training MMA at Legends I was stiff with my previous Muay Thai fighting style and completely useless on the ground after I get taken down. My training is a constant learning process from watching how the trainers move, listening to their experienced advice and then practicing with other team mates.
Wanting to learn self defense and to be able to protect myself keeps me motivated! As well as wanting to be fitter, leaner, and learning something cool like martial arts!
Just the fact that I am training consistently makes me proud! As well as the confidence martial art gives me on protecting myself.
I now have a topic that I can speak to my colleagues and friends with! It is surprising how easy people open up while talking about the UFC and how many people are interested in the topic!
Fighting competitively may not be for everyone, but keeping your body fit and protected from rough situations is for everyone! And who knows, maybe you will fall in love with martial arts like I have, and one day you could become a UFC superstar!
My Dad brought home the Rocky box set when I was 10 and I’ve been obsessed ever since.
Very positive. I had trained with Chris (MMA/Striking coach) before at another gym and followed him to Legends because I love how he blends traditional and contemporary martial arts into a system that actually works. The training is a perfect blend of fun and hard work.
Chris has an awesome way of keeping things fun but also realizing when people need to be pushed. He definitely gets the most out of us each class.
Definitely the culture. Everybody is incredibly friendly and always keen to help when you need it. If you’re looking for a solid workout session, good sparring or simply just to pick up some knowledge or techniques, it’s all there for you.
Coming from mainstream backgrounds like Boxing and Muay Thai, Chris’ training principles have allowed me to develop my footwork in ways I didn’t even know existed and his knowledge of grappling on the ground has allowed me to add heaps of techniques to my game!

I started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu about 3 years ago – it was something I always wanted to do because I had heard how meaningful it can to all aspects of your life and was more than just another form of exercise. After time I then picked up Mixed Martial Arts to make myself more well-rounded.
It was great! I didn’t feel nervous at all after I met with the instructor and the other students. I felt the great vibe instantly and came straight back next day.
Everything really. The MMA instructor Chris has a huge passion for teaching which is what I wanted in a gym – someone who cares about their students! Also I’ve made heaps of good friends here and I love coming in and catching up with everyone.
The MMA instructor Chris is a seasoned professional who knows what he’s talking about and my striking, wrestling and takedowns have really improved from training with him. Plus having good sparring partners and teammates makes Legends MMA a good environment to learn.
I have found that no matter how bad of a day I am having that I always feel great after doing some training…punching and kicking some bags and pads is a MASSIVE stress reliever for me.
Being one of the more experienced guys in the studio I take pride in helping a lot of the new guys who come in to train get better.

I started Karate at the age of five and explored Muay Thai, and then I found Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
My friend encouraged me to attend one class of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Since I love trying new avenues, I decided to have a go.
My first class changed my entire life. I knew that I had finally found the style of martial arts that resonates with who I am. Everyone was warm and welcoming. I was thrown in the deep end yet provided the right guidance to survive.
At Legends MMA, everyone is family whether you are old or new to the gym. We all support each other. There is no room for ego on the mat. This is perfectly demonstrated by our inspiring coach David Younan. Secondly, we are pushed to realise our own unlimited potential without being spoon fed.
Since I have been training at Legends MMA, my game has improved immensely. Dave scaffolds us by ensuring that we think for ourselves and solve problems as we roll. He encourages us to ask questions in class. My team-mates teach me something new every day and offer consistent support.
Every class I am enthusiastic to learn a new technique or develop my skills further with my team mates. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is my playground. I perceive the martial art as a game of life.
Being someone who likes to put myself out of my comfort zone, I am proud that I survived getting smashed by higher belts in my first 6 months. This motivated me further to compete for the first time at Nationals. Although I did not win, I walked out feeling accomplished for pushing myself mentally.
When I first commenced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu I was crippled with depression and anxiety to the extent where I walked out of almost every class. However, with the family environment that we have and supportive training I was able to start learning effectively. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helps me stay in the moment (my meditation). Rolling regularly helps me understand the flow of life and continue to persevere no matter what.

We have a strong martial arts tradition in my family, and I was massively influenced through my brother and watching him compete professionally and win some major Victorian titles.
I have trained in a few different martial arts before and I thought what better then to combine all of my training into one sport so I took up Mixed Martial Arts so I can have the best of everything.

A friend of mine told me about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I wanted to try out and I’ve loved it ever since I got in to the sport.

My dad was a professional boxer, who respected all styles of martial arts. He introduced me to Karate when I was 9 years old and I was instantly in love. When I moved out of home, I spent most of my time travelling overseas, so it was difficult to commit to training. Once I moved back to Australia, I started training in Karate again and it feels like I haven’t left the gym since, which was 8 years ago. I’ve also been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 4 years.
When I was first introduced to Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu at another gym I was training at the techniques made sense, but I didn’t understand how to incorporate them into a roll, and after 1 year of training felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere with it. Then when that other gym got a new coach (David, now the head instructor at Legends MMA)that all changed and after my very first class with Dave, I was addicted. Different culture, different team, completely different style of teaching, worked so well for me. I joined Legends MMA once I heard Dave had setup his own gym to continue to train with him. At Legends MMA, it’s more than just learning martial arts, it’s a family.

The team consists of people from different countries, race, religion, age groups but somehow when we are training together we seem to come together as one big family.
I’ve been training with Dave for 3 years now and he has always encouraged me to think for myself and build my own game. While most of the time he leaves me alone to do my own thing, whenever I feel a bit down or a bit unsure he seems to magically appear to pick me up & and he always encourages to keep trying.
Every class is challenging and there is always something new to learn or develop my skills further. The support I receive from the instructors and team mates encourages me to want to be better than I was the day before.
Receiving my brown belt in karate and blue belt in Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu, in the same year, was very special for me.
When I step into the gym all I need to think about is learning and developing my game. All the pressures and responsibilities of life are left outside. This gives me a break from everything going on in my life. After training, my self-confidence is so high, when I step back into the outside world I feel like I can take on the world and anything it wants to throw at me.
As much as I wanted to learn martial arts I was very nervous, but then when I first started I always couldn’t wait for the next session and to be back inside the gym and I kept coming back. Stepping out of your comfort zone can be scary but it’s the only way to achieve something you would never have otherwise. Martial arts a lot more than just gaining a skill It’s the friendships you make, the self-confidence you build and the resilience you learn only in a martial arts gym that can be used to manage the pressures of life.
I’ve always wanted to get into a marital art, and one day I just decided to do it.
I like exploring things hands-on so I trained in a few different martial arts. Nothing is quite like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I find it really addictive. The techniques feel very natural.
I didn’t have any gear or any experience but that didn’t matter, David was so supportive and got me started. I was welcomed by literally everyone there, the atmosphere was really positive. I did a fundamentals class, it was so fun and at the perfect level for me, it also helped tremendously to boost my confidence for the next class. I went straight into the night class, I was hooked! I felt excited about having a new group of friends who I can train with.
The passion that the coaches have is so strong and it’s reflected in the quality of training, the attention to detail, and energy in the room, they are all so inspiring. I am encouraged and supported to reach my highest goals.
At Legends there’s a perfect balance of fun and discipline. All the people I have trained with share the same great attitude, we all start and finish with a smile.

Even after the first few classes, I was able to notice a huge improvement in my movement. The coaching is fantastic, nothing compares to being in class; my strengths and weaknesses are pointed out to me when they happen which has made progress much quicker.
I still have a lot of work to do but now I have a clear idea of what I need to do to get there and I have unlimited support.
Every time I learn a new move or make mistakes, I get really motivated to conquer my mistakes and improve. I also look forward to seeing everyone at Legends, we’re like a little family. The feeling after I’ve finished a class is great, I always feel so happy.

I have been able to put my ego aside and get schooled by much higher belts, learn the basics and persevere until the end of the classes. I try my hardest to put effort into every class.

I was never really into fighting or MMA, I was searching for something to build up my fitness but stimulate my mind as well.
I love problem solving, each roll in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is just a problem that needs solving. I wanted something to help develop confidence, physical strength and patience.
I was nervous for my first class but when you’re greeted with a genuine smile and a group of people who are there to help you every step of the way the nerves leave and you can enjoy yourself in a safe and fun environment.

The day I received my blue belt - the journey changes you. I was proud to gain the courage to compete overseas and so happy to win few a golds for the team.
It has really helped build up my confidence. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu one of the best feelings is when you use your technical mindset and skills to maneuver out of difficult situations, in real life I adapt this mindset and refuse to run away from challenges, stay committed to my goals and never give up.

I grew up with a lot of people around me getting into martial arts and I’ve never had that opportunity. I felt as though it was something you had to have a go at in life and just gave it a chance.
I’m timid in nature so I wanted to do something that would bring me out of my shell. I’ve always had an interest in striking and kick boxing element so I wanted to build on that.
I didn’t really know what to expect and how I would fit in so naturally was a bit apprehensive. But have to say I felt so comfortable from the first moment I walked in.
The diversity in background students and coaches and the common passion for what they do.
They really keep you mentally sharp. Let’s just say this is not the place to just go through the motions. They whole heartedly foster your individual growth, they will guide you but ultimately it’s on you to be the driver of your growth & development. It’s really great when your coaches see the effort you’re putting into yourself.
Personal growth is really important to me which is my main motivation. There’s always ups and down in my training. I sometimes give into the negative feelings and sometimes I just park those thoughts and train away and I’m always so elated for persevering and pushing myself.
I discovered I’m a fighter. I am small in stature but I won’t let that stop me facing those twice my size.
When you make a first start, don’t be so focussed with making progress right away. Over time, if you stick with it, you really start to appreciate the journey.
